If you read Rodale's SD, look on page 31of this months and read that article entitltd Fat Boy Scuba. I e-mail RSD and told them I was pissed about how the article sounded. The diver described is a dumbass not because he is fat but because he is over confident and laks true
knowlege. They responded by saying the title was not intended to be offencive, and says there is even a web site called fat boy scuba. Do you think the article is offensive?
Love the site,

You will be of great help if you can tell me who to contact once over there and maybe name some dive sites
that are suitable for a guy like me. I will of course need to rent all the equipment and a dive master.
I am looking forward to some exciting dives in warmer waters.

Dear Fat Boy:
I enjoy your site and cruise through it often. I read your story of regulator failure
a few months ago and it gave me much to think about. At first, I kept wondering
why you did not use your alternate air source and how dumb it was to not ever
think of using it. Pondering further, I realized it could have just as well have been
me instead of you who might not have thought of it. Consequently, I began to practice
switching regulators during boring pool sessions and safety stops.
The practice in switching regulators paid off last weekend. I was on a night
dive at Lake Tenkiller, Oklahoma, with my dive buddy, a woman from
Paris, Texas, and a student making his first night dive. Aside from beingdark, the water
was murky and about twenty feet above normal. Certainly not optimal conditions,
but it was to be a short and relatively shallow dive.
We descended and we reached twenty-five feet with the student but had
lost my dive buddy. As I was looking around one of her fins swept past
my mask and became tangled in my regulator hose. The regulator was out of my
mouth and gone before I could even think about it. I realized what had
happened and attempted to retrieve my regulator only to discover it was out
of sight and apparently entangled in her fin. This was not good!
I felt a momentary welling up of panic. Fortunately, I quickly surpressed it and made
the decision to think the situation through. As I had been practicing, I reached for
my alternate air source. I was about to pull it from its keeper when I noticed
the portion of my primary hose closest to me begin to sink. Realizing it had become untangled I
found the regulator end and sucked the sweetest breath of air I ever tasted!
The incident was nothing as harrowing as your regulator failure at
110' but it could have turned into a nasty thing. My reactions that night
and the safe conclusion of the dive were the result of your posting the story
of that regulator failure. It is not easy to confess to doing something not
so smart, so I wanted you to know that your courageous posting had the
desired effect.....it helped someone else!
Thank you!

like your site..
I think its great that you will dive anywhere to check conditions.
I have one other to add for you..
Take Hwy 75 North from Dallas. Turn left before you cross the dam.
At lake texohma near sherman denison tx ESinhower state park. there
is a swim beach. drop your gear at the start of the trail and park.
wear bc and tank and weights for the trip down the hill.
the cove is protected from boats but I still work with a flag.
the viz in the summer can be 10 feet. the depth is about 25 in the flats
and quickly drops more than 70. Its cold and dark down there. Things to
see
catfish and other fish. Lots of old stumps and huge rocks.
Rest before you walk back up the hill, its a killer.
I like this spot it is the closest to North Dallas and you can make two
dives
and still make it back to dallas before dark..

Hi, My name is Linda Hannifin , I have several things to tell you. First off,
my husband Mark and I have a dive shop in Midland, TX. We have been in
business since '94. I will give you the address and such later. Second, we
have a dive site that we call Valhalla. It is an old missile silo near
Abilene. We take groups that are put together by dive shops. We require at
least 10 to 12 people because it is somewhat technical, in that it is cold,
you have to climb down a 25 foot ladder to dive, and it is dark, and deep
(130 ft, and at altitude). We have had numerous people dive it, and several
tv crews film it. CBS Sunday Morning, Japanese TV, TLC, and most recently
someone from Canadian TV wants footage of it. Thirdly, we just got back from
a trip to Lake Amistad. We rented a 56 foot houseboat, and took 10 people
diving. It ran about $180 per person. We dove at several places, If you are
interested in specifics, I could send you a copy of the map with the places
marked. This lake has bouys that serve kind of like mile markers on highways.
It is a biiiiigggggg lake! We normally train at Lake Travis, and the
visibility wasn't as good as there, but it was pretty good. Maybe 8 - 10
feet. Some places worse. This trip was a really nice, relaxing trip. We had
an exceptionally compatible group though. If you want more details, let me
know. Our dive shop is: Family Scuba Center, 3003 N. "A" Street, Midland,
TX, 79705 (915) 686-7333. We are open Mon - Sat 9-6 unless we are gone
diving. Our main brands are Scubapro, and Aqualung. We go to a place at
Travis called Lake Travis Scuba Park, you have to go with a shop that has
priveliges to go there.
Let me know if you want any more info. Linda

My dive buddy and I finished the scientific Divers course sponsored by
Southwest Texas State University last last month.
The course is designed to teach divers the unique environmental
conditions that comprise the spring lake area as well as the endangered
species found only in that area.
The course was two days long and included classroom studies with
examinations and an environmental diving practical course complete with
obstacle course tests, night and day dives.
It was no "gimmee" and will definitely verify your buoyancy control
skills in a hurry, and was well worth the $195.00 enrollment fee!
Information on course reservations can be found on the SWTSU web site.
